Guidelines for Authors of Observatoria Kultury (Observatory of Culture)

This English translation of the Guidelines for Authors of the Observatory of Culture Journal is presented for information purposes only. In case of conflict between the Russian original and the English translation, the Russian original prevails.

Observatory of Culture publishes only original research papers and other as yet unpublished research materials which comply with the Journal Publication Ethics. The subject of the article to be published should comply with the subject scope of the Journal and any of its subject headings.

The Authors should submit to the Editorial Board.

1. Manuscript (in Russian)

The original article should be submitted as a hard copy (dated and signed by the Author) and its electronic version (via the Electronic Editorial Board system on the Journal’s web-site or e-mail to observatoria@rsl.ru) as a DOC/DOCX file.

The text should be in 12-point font with 1.5 line spacing. The total length of the manuscript should not exceed 18-30,000 characters (letters and spaces between words), excluding text, abstracts, keywords, notes and references.

The manuscript should be structured as follows:

Author’s details: first name, patronymic, family name; name of employer (educational institution), including the name of the department (if available); position, postal address of the institution, academic title, rank, ORCID, SPIN, and the Author’s e-mail address are to be placed before the title of the article in the above order and will be printed together with the article. Postal address

for correspondence and phone numbers (work, home, mobile) can be used for communication purposes only between the Author and the Editorial Board and are not subject to publication.

UDC and LBC Indexes (Medium Schedules) that show the thematic context of the paper.

Headings

Data on the funding source of the research/publication (if available) should be shown in the footnote on Page 1 and marked by an asterisk in the title of the article.

Abstract - a brief presentation of the manuscript - should follow the title and describe the topicality of the subject, new approaches and key points. The length of the abstract should not exceed 250 words.

Keywords (8–10 words in italics) should be listed after the Abstract.

Main text should be split into sections (with subheadings).

The Author’s initials must be written after the family name with a non-breaking space (Ctrl + Shift + Space rollover) and without spaces between them.
The text may contain French quotation marks «...». In case both external and internal quotation marks are to be used, French quotation marks will be external ones and inverted commas “…”.will be internal ones.

There may be an em dash (—) in the text (the result of Ctrl + Alt + - rollover) and a hyphen. Automated numbering of the word processor is not to be used while making lists.

Infographics (tables, diagrams, drawings and formulas) in the text should be numbered; tables and diagrams should have headings shown above the respective graph or table; every drawing should have a caption.

References (app. 20 items) should be formatted as bibliographic endnotes according to the effective standard (Interstate Standard GOST 7.0.5-2008 Bibliographic Reference) and listed at the end of the manuscript in the order they appear in the text. Reference marks to the references in the body of the manuscript should be indicated in square brackets [reference number on the list, page number] ([8, pp.10—15; 9, p.128]). In case of the repeated citation of the same resource, reference should be made to the number of its first citation. Repeated and combined references are not allowed. Headings (and journal titles) in the second and further references can’t be replaced by their verbal equivalents like ibid, alias, etc.

While making the list of references, automated numbering of the word processor is not to be used. The ordinal number should be delimited from the text of the reference by tab. The point-and-hyphen mark that delimits the parts of the bibliographic description should be replaced by a point. All bibliographic references to electronic resources have to contain the reference date.

When citing Internet resources, it is recommended to indicate as fully as possible the name(s) of the Author(s), the title of the work, the title of the resource where this work was first published, as well as the precise reference to the web-page of the original work but not to the home page of the web-site the work cited was taken from.

Any mentioning of scientists and researchers’ names in the text of an article has to be accompanied by references to their works. All sources presented in the list of references must be mentioned within the text of the article. We do not recommend including more than two sources in a single mention.

It is recommended to monitor and use publications on the subject of the manuscript as were published in the previous issues of Observatory of Culture as well as in other journals on the respective subject in order to ensure its continuity and topicality.

Notes should be marked by Arabic figures (by means of the superscript key in the word processor menu— a1, a2) and follow the word, number, sign or sentence they refer to. The wording of the notes should be placed at the bottom of the respective page and separated from the text by a short horizontal line placed on the left side of the page with tabulation.

Captions should be structured as follows: illustration file name/number— explanations to the illustration (what/who/where is depicted; a bibliographic description should be made for book covers and their content). File numbers on the list should match the names/numbers of the pictures enclosed.

2. Data in English

Author’s details—first name, initial of the patronymic (if available), last name; employer (educational institution); postal address of the employer, e-mail address of the Author; major heading, abstract and keywords (of same length and order as in the Russian text), as well as the data on the funding source, should be presented in the printed and electronic forms (as a separate file) as a DOC/DOCX text.

The list of referenced publications should be presented in a separate file and in the transliterated form with an English translation (according to the Rules of the Editorial Board). The numbering of the referenced publications should match that in the Author’s Russian original.

3. Artwork and Illustrations

These should be submitted in the electronic form (illustrations and the photo of the Author— the latter being an absolute necessity) by separate TIFF/JPG files no less than 300 dpi together with the original article. Word-imported illustrations or their photocopies are not allowed.

Tables, charts, diagrams and graphs should be submitted in a DOC/DOCX or XLS/XLSX file which allow for editing the graphic data.

Illustrations and infographics should be adapted for high-quality black-and-white printing.

All artwork and illustrations should be provided with captions (shown in the file with the Author’s text).
